Not any more. Today the odds that you can search your local MLS from the comfort of your home are better than ever. Many brokers now provide this service at their website, and while some will require you to disclose a means of contacting you later, most will not. These online services don't give you as much detail as your local agent can get, but it is enough to get started looking around to see what is available. You'll probably even be able to look at photos. Yes, the MLS has come a long way; all you need is a computer, a high speed internet connection, and probably a link to one of your local providers listed here.
